What Is This?

One guy's attempt to put things in perspective. To reflect on the good and the bad, the sad and the mad. And hopefully, to laugh at it all.

Tilapia?

Enough! The last six restaurants I have been to that do not have a picture of a fish or crustacean in their logo, include the following on the menu: salmon, shrimp, and tilapia. Look, salmon and shrimp I have little problem with. Salmon is both distinctive and relatively easy to grow and catch. Shrimp is one of America's favorite foods, thus you can find it anyhere from Denny's to Charley's Crab and beyond. But tilapia? What happened to perch? Whitefish? Orange Roughy? Even flounder? Something, anything but tilapia, Here's what happened:

I, too, saw the Dirtiest Jobs episode featuring feces-fed tilapia growing fat on farms and packed tightly together like canned sardines. I am also rational. I know that most tilapia raised on farms are actually quite healthy. The point that really bothers me is that they are so damn adaptable! They can thrive in nearly any environment. So, if you want to grow them at a sewage treatment facility you can do do successfully. The USFDA denied a shipment of tilapia from China last year because of high levels of contaminents. We see them everywhere precisely because they can be grown so inexpensively. So, while I do eat plenty of other things that feed on poop, my personal choice is to stay away fromt the tilapia. Now where's my perch?
